Why Linux?

Introducing... Linux!

Everyone reading this will be familiar with Microsoft Windows. The chances are you are using it right now on your computer (unless you have printed this out and are reading it on the tube). Even if you are accessing this site from a portable device such as a PDA or a mobile phone you may well be using a light version of Windows known as Windows Mobile.

The fact is, Microsoft Windows is only one solution out of many available. In the same way as you can choose between many styles of desk to furnish your office, you have a choice which operating system you use on your computer systems.

But What Does It Do?

In this context, Linux is fantastic at providing network services. Common uses for Linux are Email servers, web servers, print servers, file servers and even Microsoft Windows domain controllers.

Because of the unique way we work with Gentoo Linux, we create a custom server for your current and planned future needs. In contrast to a Microsoft solution this produces a highly efficient server which can out-perform Windows 2003 by a factor of four.

You can see Linux is very versatile, it can do everything you have come to expect a typical Microsoft solution to accomplish and more but with a crucial difference...

Licensing

When you go with a Microsoft solution you are punished the more you depend on them. As the number of users increases so does the cost. You need to buy new licenses for every user who connects to your server. As you can imagine, this quickly becomes an expensive hobby.

The distinctive development process of Linux does away with this love-hate relationship between the supplier and the customer. Once you have a Linux server in place there are no costs for allowing extra users to connect. One user may as well be ten users or one hundred users - Say goodbye to licenses, say hello to Gentoo.
